Welcome to the only official site for People Like Us and Vicki Bennett
Since 1991 British artist Vicki Bennett has been working across the field of audio-visual collage, and is recognised as an influential and pioneering figure in the still growing area of sampling, appropriation and cutting up of found footage and archives. Working under the name People Like Us, Vicki specialises in the manipulation and reworking of original sources from both the experimental and popular worlds of music, film and radio. People Like Us believe in open access to archives for creative use. In 2006 she was the first artist to be given unrestricted access to the entire BBC Archive. People Like Us have previously shown work at, amongst others, Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, The Barbican, Centro de Cultura Digital, Maxxi and Sonar, and performed radio sessions for John Peel and Mixing It. She has an ongoing sound art radio show 'DO or DIY' on WFMU. The People Like Us back catalogue is available for free download hosted by UbuWeb. Nothing Can Turn Into A Void – a doc film about People Like Us has been screening in cinemas and festivals since Autumn 2015.
Currently, Vicki is focussing on expanding a/v work for a multiscreen and multi-speakered environment with RML Cinechamber, with 10-screen work "Gone, Gone Beyond". Also a new People Like Us live performance "The Mirror" premiered at Onassis Cultural Centre Athens in Spring 2018 and now tours worldwide. October 2018 saw the release of a new CD/online album also called The Mirror. Vicki is a participant in Sound and Music New Voices 2018 programme, a-n Artist Bursaries 2019 recipient, and is Hallwalls Artist in Residence from 2019-2020.

Ámbitus. Art and music today | 8.9.2018 – 6.1.2019
The fact that visual arts and music do not have to be separate worlds shows from September 9th at the Magdeburg Art Museum. For a few decades, artists have been exploring or transcending the transitions and spaces between these two arts. Today, video and performance artists equally use existing and newly composed music as musicians and composers have begun to make their compositions visually tangible. And of course there are also exciting cooperations between the two fields.
Spectacle is a collectively run screening space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, established and staffed entirely by hard working, cinema-loving volunteers. Spectacle is located at 124 South 3rd Street, Brooklyn, New York, between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street.
Sound and Music is delighted to announce the 15 composers and creative artists who will be its 2018 New Voices, and the first group to go through this brand new artist development programme.
New Voices 2018 are: Alex Ho, Andy Ingamells, Bex Burch, Daniel McBride, David Austin Grey, Edmund Hunt, Eska Mtungwazi, Eunseog Lee, Gugak Sounds, Johnny Hunter, Liz Johnson, Marcus Joseph, Stuart Brown, Supriya Nagarajan and Vicki Bennett.
Congratulations to our New Voices 2018! These fifteen are creating work across a very broad range of musical genres but they share a deep commitment to critical engagement with their practice. All fifteen New Voices want to make changes to, and effect development within, their work. They are learners who cultivate their craft and we hope to be worthy of the trust they have placed in us to work alongside them.
New Voices is Sound and Music’s major Composer Development programme, lasting 18 months with an annual intake. It draws on the models from our previous Embedded, Portfolio and Pathways programmes, and on the partnerships and expertise nurtured through these schemes. Find out more here.
